Just picked up a 1TB Western Digital My Book drive for extra storage and backing up my MacBook. Placed the drive on the desk and plugged it into power but did not turn it on yet. I then plugged the firewire cable into my MacBook and my MacBook just went dead. No noise, no warning, just blank.
I left the Firewire cable in (with the drive still powered down) and turned the machine back on. Normal boot cycle. Once it started it saw the My Book drive once I turned that on too. Everything looked fine until I noticed that my battery icon looked different - when I highlighted it it indicated that there was no battery! Hmmm..
I pulled out the mag power connector and the machine went completely dark again. I then unplugged the My Book from the Mac and everything came up normal. This Mac does not like the My Book.
I was able to connect the My Book to my Windows XP machine through Firewire and it worked fine, no problem.
Does this sound like a faulty Firewire port on my MacBook? Anyone seen similar problems with My Book drives (ideally the 1TB model)?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

My Wd Book
Just purchased a LinkSys e3000 router and WD My Book for Mac (+ WD Smartware) for the purpose of backing up my two MacBook Pros wirelessly. The router works PERFECTLY for all other wireless and routing functions. Bottom line, the LinkSys router can not access the USB external drive's partitions even though it can'see' the drive. If you aren't, open My Computer and look for a CD drive called 'WD Unlocker'. This is a partition on the My Book drive that contains the software that will allow you to unlock the drive. Open this drive by double clicking on it and then double click 'WD Drive Unlock'. Samsung s8 transfer files to mac. So on another note, if anyone is interested in buying a slightly used but still within “warranty” 1TB external My Book hard drive, (did i mention it doesn’t work), as well as a WD TV Live, which currently is working but i’m sure it will fail soon. Drop me a line and we can sort something out. Screenshots not opening on mac. Wireless mouse for mac computer. Maybe WD might even freight it for free.
